Join us for an evening talking with organizer and fillmmaker Simón Sedillo and viewing the new the film from the Mano Vuelta Media Colletive “Xip Xop oaXaca” about conscious Hip Hop in Oaxaca, Mexico.
We’ll look at specific institutions which threaten the lives of average everyday people everywhere. From banks and corporations to non-profits and universities, to prisons, weapons and drugs; what role do these institutions and industries have in making the poor stay poor, while making the rich get richer? We’ll also look at how the devaluation of traditional forms of self governance and self determination, has lead to the criminalization of entire sectors of society. Finally Simón will share some indigenous strategies for self determination as guides for urban community (hood) liberation.

Simón Sedillo is a community rights defense organizer and film maker. He has spent the last 8 years documenting, producing and teaching community based video documentation in Mexico and the US. Through lectures, workshops, and short films, Sedillo breaks down the effects of neoliberalism, the North American Free Trade Agreement, and militarism on indigenous communities, immigrant communities, and communities of color in the US and Mexico. Through collaborative media projects, Sedillo’s work has contributed to a growing network of community based media production whose primary objective is to share, teach, and learn from one another, about community based media production and the collective construction of horizontal networks of community rights defense.
Denver Anarchist Black Cross hosts a film night to benefit the over 150 people who were arrested during the rebellions in response to the January 2009 police killing of Oscar Grant III in California.
On the night of January 7th, a protest of the execution became a riot in downtown Oakland as barricades were formed, businesses were vandalized, and luxury cars, police cruisers and city vehicles were smashed and arsoned. Rioting continued on January 14th and 30th.
Over a year later, felony charges remained against two individuals–the charges against JR Valrey were recently dropped; Holly Works’ trial begins in April. Both are facing high legal fees.
Donations will go to help defray the legal fines of the Oakland 100.
A discussion will follow the short film, copies of ‘Unfinished Acts’ (a detailed and illustrated narrative of the Oakland riots) will be available, and refreshments will be provided.
Please come support the Oakland 100 and celebrate rebellions against the police.

A federal Green Labeling Law would create a great amount of cancer prevention educational outreach. This is education that we all have a right to receive. We have the right to know what chemicals we are exposed to by way of food consumption and consumer product use. Green labeling would inform consumers of what carcinogens are present in foods and products. Elizabeth has worked for years toward eventual passage of such a law. You can become part of this work to create good public health laws.
